2017-18 Programme for Teachers and Teaching Assistants with NHS Children's Therapy Services

Please find below details of the LLF TSA Professional Learning programmes being offered by LLF TSA with NHS Children’s Therapy Services in 2017-18:

Most of these Professional Learning programmes and events can be requested on a bespoke basis for your school, academy, college or organisation. About the NHS Children's Therapy Services Programme for Teachers:

Encouraging Learning Skills – Spring 2018 or on request

Communication skills are essential for learning across the whole school curriculum. Encouraging Learning Skills is a programme of 3 modules for Teaching Assistants who want to encourage the development of key communication skills -  listening, language and speech - in all children as part of everyday learning activities. This programme is aimed at providing an overview of good practice within the classroom to help children to develop these essential communication skills. The programme is delivered in workshop style sessions and consists of 3 sessions of 1.5 hours each. 

ELKLAN® Speech & Language Support (5-11) – Autumn 2017 (Spring 2018 dates coming soon)

ELKLAN® have developed a range of successful, accredited courses for practitioners supporting learners with speech, language and communication needs.  These are highly practical training events designed to equip practitioners with approaches and strategies to maximise speech, language and communication skills of ALL learners; in particular those with speech, language and communication needs and/or English as an Additional Language. The ELKLAN® (5-11) programme is appropriate for practitioners working in primary schools. 

ELKLAN® Communication Support for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – Summer 2018 only

The programme consists of five fortnightly teaching sessions, lasting four hours, run by ELKLAN® trained specialist tutors. The programme will include the use of interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos and group discussion to engage learners, promote information exchange and mutual support.

Makaton® Introduction Workshop - Autumn 2017 or Spring/Summer 2018 or on request

This 1.5 hour workshop will provide delegates with a general insight into what Makaton® is and who uses it, with the added opportunity to learn some targeted signs and symbols useful to your setting. Delivered in an enjoyable and interactive style, the workshop provides opportunities to discuss ideas on how you could use Makaton.

Makaton® Beginners’ Workshop – Spring/Summer 2018 or on request

Makaton® uses signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech in spoken word order. The Beginners' Workshop provides a practical introduction to the Makaton® Language Programme. Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton® in everyday situations at home or work. Participants must have an interest in early communication skills.

Makaton® Foundation Workshop – Spring/Summer 2018 or on request

The Makaton® Foundation Workshop of 4 x 2.5 hour twilight sessions will build on learning from the introductory workshop revealing how Makaton® can develop the communication skills of its users. Participants will develop signing skills in using around 150 everyday signs in speaking situations for supporting understanding and expression. They will be introduced to the accompanying symbols how they may be used to make communication resources.

Makaton® Refresher Workshop - Autumn 2017 or Spring/Summer 2018 or on request

This 1.5 hour Refresher workshop will provide delegates who have already completed the Beginners or the Foundation Workshop with a general review of what Makaton® is and who uses it, with the added opportunity to revise some signs and symbols. Delivered in an enjoyable and interactive style, the workshop provides opportunities to discuss ideas on how to develop use of Makaton® within your setting.

Supporting Children with Speech & Language Needs (updated) – Autumn 2017 or Spring 2018 

A choice of two x 1 day events for Teaching Assistants working in North Lincolnshire with identified children who have speech and language learning difficulties. Each event aims to help TAs to improve the quality of children’s individual learning within the classroom. Applications can be made to attend either or both of the events described below, in the same term or across two terms, according to school and individual preferences.
