School Improvement Support for the 2019 to 2020 Academic Year Announcement
Following the Department for Education's recent announcement of additional funding for schools, an update has been made to the school improvement offer page:
The Secretary of State has announced that for schools that have been rated requires improvement (RI) by Ofsted, we will expand our School Improvement offer by giving a subset of schools extra help on top of the previously announced levels.
For the 2019-20 school improvement offer, this means that additional ‘tier 3’ support of up to £24,000 is available for schools who currently have an RI judgement and have not been rated above RI since 2005, across a minimum of 4 inspections. Free courses to up-skill ‘non-specialist’ and returning teachers
Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST) courses are now available to up-skill non-specialist and returning teachers in secondary mathematics, core maths, physics and modern foreign languages, increasing subject knowledge, pedagogy and confidence.
· TSST courses can help with timetable and workforce planning.
· Flexibility of courses, includes twilight sessions, weekends as well as online provision.

Mathematics and Physics Teacher Retention Payments
The Department for Education recently announced details of the Mathematics and Physics teacher retention payments pilot, which will run across the academic years 2019 to 2020 and 2020 to 2021.
Mathematics and physics teachers in the first five years of their career will be eligible for a £2000 retention payment after tax. To be eligible, teachers must have completed either an undergraduate or postgraduate mathematics or physics related degree or initial teacher training (ITT) course specialising in mathematics or physics. Teachers must also be employed in a state-funded secondary in the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, or remaining Opportunity Areas (OAs) and can be employed on a full-time or part-time basis. It is anticipated that eligible teachers will be able to claim and have their payments issued to them in the autumn 2019 and autumn 2020 terms. Register now: TLIF-funded CPD programme for teachers in geography and science classrooms
Registration for Critical Thinking will be closing on 30th November 2019.
Delivered by the Geographical Association and Association for Science Education, Critical Thinking aims to develop the critical use of evidence in geography and science classrooms, for both primary and secondary teachers.
The programme involves:
· Two days of professional development including an initial planning session focussing on specialist classroom pedagogies and a concluding session with peer and expert challenge
· A supported classroom project involving applying an aspect of specialist pedagogy to teachers’ own classrooms
· Individual mentoring
· Professional development sessions to share practice
· Access to a range of resources
· Online network space and networks to provide support for further development and cascading of information and learning materials

Supporting deaf children in school
Teachers of the Deaf play a vital role in supporting deaf children from birth to adulthood, supporting and working with families, and acting as a key worker for deaf children and young people. It can offer a unique career pathway for teachers and SENCOs looking to take on a new role that can have a big impact on deaf children.
